GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Jan. 23, 2026 — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed an antitrust lawsuit today alleging that major oil companies conspired for decades to suppress competition from renewable energy and drive up energy costs for consumers in Michigan. In response, state Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement: “Families in West Michigan work hard to make ends meet, and rising energy costs make that harder every month. The allegations in this lawsuit raise serious questions about how corporate decisions put profits ahead of people, and what our role in government is to protect those we serve.
“At the same time, we in the Grand Rapids area continue to grapple with some of the worst air-quality in the state. When big corporations delay cleaner, more affordable energy, communities like ours pay twice: higher utility bills and real harm to people’s health. Accountability matters, and I thank the Attorney General for taking action.”
