▩ Press Statement

LANSING, Mich., Oct. 6, 2025 — The Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets today, funding a combined $78 billion for state and public-school operations. After refusing to back down in budget negotiations to defend critical Medicaid, food assistance and education funding, state Rep. Jason Hoskins (D-Southfield) voted for a bipartisan budget that reflects Michigan’s priorities. The state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, protects access to affordable health care and SNAP benefits and funds universal school meals, transportation and mental health resources that kids depend on.

After the vote, Hoskins issued the following statement:

“This is a budget that reflects hard choices under extraordinary pressure. When looming federal cuts threatened to strip $7.6 billion from Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services, Democrats fought to protect Medicaid and health care. We also continued universal school meals, raised the per-pupil foundation allowance to $10,050 — the highest in state history — and directed $321 million toward school mental health and safety. These steps will provide real relief to families in Southfield and across Michigan, and they show that even in difficult times we can defend essential services.

“Closer to home, I’m proud that we secured $1.1 million to replace Lathrup Village’s nearly century-old primary water pipeline. Over the past decade, this line has broken more than ten times, disrupting services and putting homes and businesses at risk. Replacing it will restore safe, reliable water for residents, improve quality and pressure, and strengthen our capacity to respond to emergencies. This investment protects health, safety, and public infrastructure while saving families from costly crises in the future.

“No budget is perfect, but this one reflects the compromise needed to keep Michigan moving forward. It protects what matters most today and builds a foundation for tomorrow. I will continue working to ensure future budgets expand opportunity, grow our economy, and deliver lasting fairness for every Michigander.”
