LANSING, Mich., Dec. 14, 2023 — General Motors announced layoffs today at two Michigan plants, affecting 1,314 workers. The announcement by GM today follows the other layoff announcement just weeks ago by Stellantis, affecting over a 1,000 Michiganders. State Rep. Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park), chair of the Labor Caucus, issued the following statement in response to the GM layoffs:

“The layoff of workers by GM is an outrageous move motivated by corporate greed. These layoffs were announced not only in the middle of the holiday season, but also after GM has received hundreds of millions of dollars in state tax incentives, and following the ratification of a historic contract for better wages and benefits. To then turn around and layoff workers is an unacceptable betrayal. I urge GM to reverse course and prioritize the primary driver of its business: the workers.”
