Things are moving quickly in Lansing right now. I know it can be frustrating when it feels like decisions are happening behind closed doors and your voice is not being heard.

You work hard for your paycheck. You deserve a government that respects that and uses your tax dollars to make life more affordable, more secure and a little easier for your family.

Over the last few weeks, I have been focused on keeping our state budget grounded in reality and centered on what matters most to you. That means lowering costs, strengthening our schools and making sure every dollar is working for the people it is meant to serve.

As these budget conversations continue, I am staying focused on the basics that matter in your daily life. That includes keeping costs down, investing in strong public schools and making sure we are being responsible with every dollar so your tax money is used wisely.

Protecting Your Tax Dollars

You pay your taxes expecting that money to fund the basics, like supporting public schools, fixing roads and making life more affordable. But sometimes, massive spending bills are rushed through the legislature with not enough time to review.

Recently, the House introduced and immediately voted on a $152 million spending bill for new runways at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

The federal government and the President previously promised to pay for this project, and I believe they should hold up their end of the bargain. I am very supportive of Selfridge and the jobs it brings to our region, but I also know that families are struggling right now with high grocery prices and housing costs. We should be concentrating our time and money on tackling the problems that are troubling Michiganders most.

I went on the House floor to speak out against this rushed process and vote against this bill. By pushing back on reckless spending, I’m working to keep our state budget focused on your family and our neighborhoods.

March is Reading Month

I’m spending this month traveling throughout the district reading to students! We just kicked things off with great groups of kids at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Ann Arbor and a school visit to Hillside Middle School in Northville. Studies show that reading aloud to children expands their vocabulary, sparks their imagination and builds a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning.

Celebrating March is Reading Month brings our community together and gives our students the encouragement they need to thrive inside and outside the classroom.

Constituent Services: Cutting Through Red Tape

Navigating state agencies to get help with unemployment, Medicaid or licensing can be incredibly frustrating. My office is here to help.

If you are hitting a wall with a state department, please reach out to my office. Having a direct line to the state government helps save you time and reduces the headache of dealing with this on your own. We’re here to serve you and make sure your government actually works for you.

Thank you to everyone who continues to send emails and make phone calls. Your involvement makes this work possible. We have a lot of important issues to tackle this spring, and I’m looking forward to keeping you updated every step of the way.

In solidarity,

Jason Morgan

State Representative

Michigan’s 23rd House District
