🏛️ The 2026-27 Budget: The Current Proposal, and My Concerns

Recently, House Republicans put forth their proposal for the state budget. Here are some “highlights” of that proposal, which I oppose:

  • Cuts the RX Kids program by $20 million.
  • Reduces support for veterans by cutting the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs by over $33 million per year.
  • Delivers a $470.6 million cut to public universities operations and an $11 million cut to community colleges operations.
  • Cuts programs for high school dropout recovery.
  • Adds a 20% penalty for portions of a school district’s funding tied to policies or instruction that, in my view, exclude transgender girls or restrict teaching accurate history about race and gender.
  • Fails to provide the level of Medicaid and SNAP funding recommended by the governor to meet the increased need resulting from the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
  • Cuts energy programs by $6 million.
  • Business attraction and community development programs see a $19 million decrease.
  • A 50% cut to the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.
  • Childcare and child development programs get cut by $19.5 million.

The budget reflects the values and priorities of those who wrote it. House Republicans have made their values clear with this budget proposal. The Senate has also passed their budget proposal. Now, negotiations between the two chambers and the governor can begin with the hopes of delivering a budget by the July 1 deadline.

If there is any legislation that you are especially passionate about, please feel free to contact my office. You may also want to reach out to the House Speaker or the chair of the committee that the bill is in if it is awaiting a hearing.
