Hazardous waste processing plant receives green light to further disrupt communities

DETROIT, Mich., Dec. 19, 2025 — This week, The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) approved US Ecology Detroit South’s request to renew its hazardous waste management facility operating license. This renewal comes after consistent community opposition and demands that the facility be shut down. Following the announcement of the license renewal, state Rep. Donavan McKinney (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“With this move, EGLE is further decimating already overburdened communities. When I joined colleagues from the Senate and community leaders earlier this year to introduce the Protecting Overburdened Communities Act, we were seeking to reform practices like these at facilities such as this one. Community members have made it clear that they don’t want to live in highly polluted areas. Everyone deserves to breathe clean air, yet EGLE and US Ecology Detroit South are pushing that basic right further out of reach for Detroit neighborhoods.”
