McKinney Condemns Trump’s Threats to Block Opening of Gordie Howe Bridge

DETROIT, Mich., Feb. 11, 2026 — President Trump recently claimed that he will not permit the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, effectively renewing his trade war on Canada. The Detroit-Windsor corridor is one of the busiest in the country, handling hundreds of billions of dollars in goods annually and supporting thousands of jobs on both sides of the border. After Trump’s remarks, state Rep. Donavan McKinney (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“Holding the Gordie Howe Bridge hostage jeopardizes jobs, drives up costs for manufacturers and ultimately risks making life more expensive for Michiganders. When supply chains are disrupted, prices rise — from groceries to cars to household goods. This threatens one of our most important trade corridors and creates even more barriers to affordability at a time when people are already stretched thin. We need to fortify infrastructure meant to strengthen our economy, not turning it into a bargaining chip.”
