MT. CLEMENS, Mich., Jan. 7, 2025 — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued an opinion today declaring that House Republicans’ maneuver to clawback $645 million in previously approved work project funding was unconstitutional. The opinion follows weeks of immediate and relentless actions from legislative Democrats fighting to urge the restoration of dollars promised to kids, moms, families, small businesses and more.
In response, state Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens) issued the following statement:
“Last month, I condemned House Republicans for canceling millions of dollars in community investments and made it clear that I would do everything in my power to bring this money back to Macomb County. The Attorney General’s announcement today affirms that not only was this move harmful to millions of Michiganders, it was also unconstitutional.
“This funding was stripped away from newborns and mothers, from neighborhood health clinics, non-profits, community safety programs and from programs that help house veterans. Additionally, funding was taken away from the Macomb Community College Public Service Institute that would update the apparatus bay for firefighter training as well as cuts to the Sterling Heights Police Department Command Vehicle. Michiganders need certainty that the programs they rely on are there when they need them. I remain committed to ensuring this money is returned to where it belongs: with the people.”
