LANSING, Mich., May 27, 2026 — Gov.  Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4572 into law today,  providing additional funding for the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. The additional funds will be used for infrastructure improvements ahead of the new fighter mission that was announced last year. The base has a substantial economic impact on the state and supports tens of thousands of jobs statewide, with a particularly strong influence on Macomb County communities.

After the signing, state Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens), who was in attendance, released the following statement:

“Today’s bill signing marks an important step for Michigan and our country. Selfridge is absolutely vital to our state’s economy and national defense and supports tens of thousands of jobs statewide. Investing in these runways means more than just funding the project — it means investing in an institution that brings an estimated $850 million in annual economic impact to Macomb County and Southeast Michigan and by extension, the families who rely on related employment.

“This is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue; it is simply a Michigan issue. I am so proud to have supported this funding from the jump, and it is a great achievement to get this investment across the finish line. I know that supporting this base ultimately means supporting our state’s economic security and our national security. Today’s signing prepares this base to continue to be a staple of Michigan and my local community’s economies for years to come.”
