LANSING, Mich., Dec. 12, 2025 — House Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee voted to disapprove more than $644 million in previously authorized FY 2025 work project funding, including over $351 million in state General Fund dollars, from programs that directly support communities across Michigan. The many cuts included $2 million from the Macomb Community College Public Safety Institute and $750,000 from the Sterling Heights police.
In response to the Republican cuts, state Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens) issued the following statement:
“What my colleagues across the aisle did this week was as unprecedented as it was harmful. In a corrupt and heartless move, House Republicans have decided to cut more than half a billion dollars in critical project funding, harming thousands of Michiganders who rely on that money. They have made repeated claims about waste, fraud and abuse, and yet, no evidence has ever been presented of that waste. The ‘waste’ they are talking about includes wigs for children with cancer, funding to ensure moms and newborns have proper care and veterans have homes.
“While I am disappointed, and frankly, angry at their actions, my focus remains the same: bringing money home to my community in Macomb County and putting money back in the pockets of Michiganders.”
