Michigan’s Role in Jan. 6 Insurrection2021-08-05T08:34:11-04:00

The Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection was one of the darkest moments in our nation’s recent history, and the people of Michigan deserve answers and accountability for those involved. It would be cowardly to turn away and ignore the role that our state played in the lead up to that dark day.

Michigan’s Capitol served as a proving ground to the insurrection at our nation’s Capital when in April 2020 armed demonstrators entered the building and confronted police. What’s more, members of the legislative majority met with people who took part in the Jan. 6 insurrection, signed onto a lawsuit attempting to overturn the results of the election, and brought a slate of false electors to the doors of the state Capitol.

The preservation of a free democracy crosses party lines, so we’re calling on our fellow legislators to join us in creating a bipartisan committee to investigate this clear attack on our republic and take the necessary steps to ensure this never happens again. Acts of violence against our democracy, both in Michigan and in D.C., cannot be ignored or left unexamined.

House Democrats introduced House Concurrent Resolution 10 to create a bipartisan joint select committee to investigate Michigan’s ties to the Capitol insurrection, including the April dress rehearsal at our Michigan Capitol and the bringing of false electors to our state Capitol.

The committee would be composed of 12 members of the Legislature — six senators and six representatives, which must include an even number of Democrats and Republicans from each chamber. This committee presents an important opportunity to get answers, make improvements and move forward for the sake of our democracy and future generations.

Ways in which Republicans contributed to the insurrection:

  • Republican legislators brought false electors to our Capitol in Lansing.
  • Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey met with militia members in our Capitol in Lansing.
  • Shirkey said the D.C. insurrection was “a hoax.”
  • 15 Michigan Republican legislators joined a lawsuit to overturn the
    2020 presidential election.
  • Republicans continue to perpetuate the Big Lie by calling into
question the validity of the election, especially with their voter
    suppression package.
  • Republicans held a special oversight hearing and turned over control
to Rudy Giuliani to air unfounded conspiracy theories.
