Miller Stands Against Cuts to Health Care, Farmers and Families in the GOP House Budget
Lawmaker fights for a family-supporting budget that protects Medicaid, SNAP and farmers
LANSING, Mich., Sept. 3, 2025 — Last Tuesday, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill, House Bill 4706, which would strip more than $6 billion from essential services Michiganders rely on. This would include everything from hospitals and nursing homes, to food assistance and Farm to Family grants. The cuts to state Medicaid and SNAP funding come at the same time as devastating reductions from Washington, compounding the harm to Michigan families.
After voting no to protect Michigan’s kids, families and farmers from higher costs and threats to economic opportunity, state Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Twp.) issued the following statement:
“Budgets fund vital lifelines for Michigan’s communities, families and farmers to protect them from higher costs and fewer opportunities. My priority is to deliver a people-first budget that lowers costs and protects health care and food access, especially while federal leaders are already cutting those lifelines. Unfortunately, this budget does the polar opposite.
“It slashes $3.8 million from the Double Up Food Bucks Program, which I worked hard to expand, and eliminates more than $4 billion from the Department of Health and Human Services, which funds Medicaid and keeps rural hospitals open. It also guts one-third of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s budget, including animal safety programs and Farm to Family grants.
“Taking away health care and food support isn’t just cruel, it also makes Michigan residents weak and puts them at risk. Access to doctors, hospitals and nutritious food are basic human rights and should not be used as bargaining chips and weapons in budget negotiations. I will keep fighting until every Michigan family can count on a budget that protects health care, education and our rural roads, and not one that sabotages our safety, health and well-being.”
