The U.S. House of Representatives just passed Trump’s abomination of a budget bill by a narrow margin. It is now on its way to be signed into law. The devastating effects this will have on every Michigan family cannot be overstated.
The loss of billions of dollars in federal support for critical programs like SNAP and Medicaid would not just impact those needing the programs; it would bleed into every other aspect of life in our state. 2.5 million Michiganders rely on Medicaid for their health insurance, and 1.4 million receive food assistance. The cuts in Medicaid could also affect funding for nursing homes and hospitals, causing some to close down.
It would also blow a $2 billion hole in our state budget and the state simply does not have enough funding to fill it completely, and mitigating losses in these critical categories means we’d have to accept losses in others — infrastructure and public safety, for example — meaning we all suffer.
As budget conversations continue at the state level, House Democrats are exploring every option to protect healthcare access and food assistance benefits for as many Michiganders as possible. Republicans in both Congress and the State House may be intent on gutting the programs that protect our most vulnerable people, but we’re not going to let them do it without a fight.

The 'big, beautiful bill' is heading to President Donald Trump's desk for signature thanks to support from Michigan Republicans in the US House. Here's what it could mean for the state.0 CommentsComment on Facebook
July 1st was the statutory deadline for the state’s school aid budget. However, Speaker Matt Hall and the House Republicans have failed to get a deal done by that deadline. Negotiating the budget for the state is the only responsibility of the Legislature that is outlined in the state constitution—meaning it is our single greatest duty. Our schools are now planning in the dark for their next fiscal year because of their failure.
Carefully and appropriately allocating billions of dollars to fund nearly every aspect of our state and local government and the services they provide usually takes months of diligent effort. Matt Hall and Republican leadership tried to cram the entire process into one afternoon and failed miserably. Hours of time and thousands of taxpayer dollars were wasted during an eight-hour session in which nothing was accomplished for the budget, because Republicans, under Hall’s leadership, could not produce an actual bill for review.
If there had been a real budget plan, it would have been put on paper and put up for a vote. Hall took a political gamble by running up to the deadline of the budget process, and his gamble failed. It is inexcusable that the price for that gamble isn’t paid by him, but by the schools, teachers and children of this state.

Yesterday, June 24, marked three years since the Supreme Court made the devastating decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, undoing the half-century guarantee of an individual’s right to safe, legal abortion. While Dobbs v. Jackson triggered state abortion bans across the country, Michigan Democrats solidified our commitment to ensuring accessible and safe abortion care — and we’re going to keep fighting to ensure your rights are not taken away, especially in the current climate where Republicans are weaponizing your rights.
As someone who has struggled with endometriosis, I know first hand the importance of being able to make medical decisions about my body and reproduction. I will continue to fight to protect these rights.

The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) keeps our kids from going hungry by supplementing grocery budgets so low-income families can afford nutritious food essential to their health and well-being. Republicans are hacking away at this program, proving they are not prioritizing the health and safety of our children. I will always fight for full stomachs because that is a basic right! ... Heat Wave Alert and Resources!
We are expecting record-breaking heat this weekend through next week, with high heath and humidity. Our priority is to keep everyone safe during this time. Please make sure you are aware of the cooling centers in Washtenaw County ( www.washtenaw.org/3636/Summer-Cooling-Sites ) and review these tips and resources from DTE for keeping yourself cool and managing bills during these high heat days.
Safety tips:
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
- Stay out of direct sunlight if possible, bring pets indoors and check on others
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Don’t leave people or pets in your car
- Avoid high energy activity or outdoor work during midday heat, if possible
- Check on family, seniors and neighbors
- Know the signs of heat sickness and watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Managing Bills:
- Cook meals with a microwave, crockpot or outdoor grill instead of your oven, which adds extra heat into your home
- Postpone doing laundry or running the dishwasher until the evening once outdoor temperatures have cooled down a bit
- Let your dishes air dry in the dishwasher instead of using the heated drying feature
- Close curtains and shades on sun-facing windows to keep the heat out and your home cool and comfortable
- A fan cools people, not rooms, so use one to create a breeze and turn it off when you leave the room to save energy

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of joining my Washtenaw County colleagues for a town hall hosted by our awesome Congresswoman, Debbie Dingell. We talked about all the relevant issues from the state budget to the Trump Administration's massive cuts to crucial funding and services that people rely on, and how we are offering an alternative vision to the chaos that we see from the President, Congress, and the Michigan House Republicans.
We also took questions from the audience about the issues that matter to them. In this time of uncertainty and chaos, it is important for us to show up to talk to our constituents in order grounded in our community and deliver the policy solutions that they need. Thank you to everyone who joined, and I hope to see you in the next one.
If you weren't able to make it, you can find the recording on the Congresswoman's page: Rep. Debbie Dingell

Juneteenth is more than a celebration. It’s a solemn reminder of freedom delayed, justice denied, and the ongoing fight for true equity.
It’s a day to honor the strength of those who endured bondage, the courage of those who demanded freedom, and the legacy of Black Americans who continue to shape this nation.
As we reflect on the progress made and the work still ahead, may this day galvanize us to build a future rooted in justice, dignity, and real liberation for all.
