LANSING, Mich., March 4, 2026 — State Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit) issued the following statement condemning President Donald Trump’s congressionally unauthorized war in Iran and calling on Congress to act immediately to stop further escalation:
“President Donald Trump has launched a war with Iran without congressional authorization and without verified evidence of an imminent threat. His actions are unlawful under the U.S. Constitution. Here in Michigan, many families have loved ones in the very regions now being bombed. Children, civilians, and American lives have already been lost in this illegal and needless war.
“Americans do not want another war in the Middle East. It is immoral, and further, at a time when families across Michigan are already struggling with rising costs, every dollar spent on an illegal and unnecessary war is a dollar taken away from health care, our children’s schools, affordable housing, and infrastructure here at home. Congress has the power and the duty to stop this escalation. I urge Congress to pass a War Powers Resolution and cease further military action before more lives are lost and our country is pulled deeper into a war the American people never asked for.”
