đ« Don Johnson Fieldhouse Renovation Receives $1.2 Million in State Budget |

The Lansing School District will receive $1.2 million in the new state budget to renovate the Don Johnson Fieldhouse. The fieldhouse is home to the Lansing Student Development Program. This program offers free, year-round access to academic resources, athletics and exercise, nutritious meals, and mentorship. Renovations planned at the fieldhouse include adding two classrooms, a basketball court, and a commercial kitchen. This program serves a need for safe, positive afterschool and summer activities for our young people. Thatâs why I was happy to support this state grant application in this yearâs budget process along with my counterpart in the state Senate. |

đ Domestic Violence Awareness âPurple Outâ Day Held at State Capitol |

I joined Voices of Color for their 6th annual Michigan Domestic Violence Awareness Purple Out Day last Saturday. This event gave community members a chance to honor survivors, remember loved ones who have been lost to domestic violence, and raise awareness about the importance of prevention efforts. According to the CDC, about 41% of women and 26% of men experience sexual or physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. 𧞠Recently Passed State Budget Supports Moms and Babies Through Rx Kids |
|
Rx Kids, a cash aid program for moms and babies in Michigan, received $270 million in the recently signed state budget. Moms living in communities participating in Rx Kids can receive $1,500 in cash assistance during their pregnancy, and $500 a month for the first six to 12 months of the babyâs life. This program is already operating in 11 communities around the state. Lansing and Delhi Township are not currently on the list of participating locations, but this funding will allow the program to expand, with approximately 100 thousand new babies benefiting over the next three years. Research shows that participation in Rx Kids is associated with reductions in evictions, postpartum depression, and neonatal intensive care admissions. |

đ„Ș Free School Lunch Week Highlights Continued Funding For Universal Meals |

Oct. 13-17 is Free School Lunch Week in Michigan. This comes less than a week after the state budget was signed that continues universal free school meals â breakfast and lunch â for all Michigan public school students. Over one million Michigan students benefit from this program, allowing families to save $1,000 per child every school year. |
