LANSING, Mich., Feb. 11, 2026 — Today, Budget Director Jen Flood presented Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive budget recommendations for the upcoming fiscal year. As the budget process begins, House Democrats are focused on lowering costs, investing in education, protecting Medicaid and delivering relief to Michigan families. Following the presentation, state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw), member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement: “Costs continue to rise faster than paychecks, and too many Michigan families are stretched thin. Housing, health care and utility bills are taking a bigger share of household budgets, and this year’s state budget must meet people where they are. That means staying focused on affordability and delivering real stability for working families across our state. “We also need to be realistic. The Trump administration, through H.R. 1, has created real financial stress for the State of Michigan and everyday people. We face a tough year ahead, and one thing is certain: Michiganders cannot afford another late budget. Failing to pass a budget on time creates real consequences; schools struggle to hire teachers, districts face costly debts and local governments are left unable to plan. Michiganders deserve better. Our responsibility is to pass a budget by June 30 that puts students, workers and communities first.” |
