LANSING, Mich., Sept. 10, 2026 — The Michigan Senate today passed Senate Bill 1134, the Senate version of state Rep. Amos O’Neal’s (D-Saginaw) House Bill 6233. This legislation would create a pathway for eligible corrections officers to join the Michigan State Police Retirement System, helping improve recruitment and retention. The bill is one of the “Limbo Nine” measures that was reintroduced after prolonged litigation and months of delay. O’Neal released the following statement in response:
“Corrections officers show up every day and do a tough job that most people never see. They keep our facilities safe, support rehabilitation and serve communities across Michigan, often under difficult conditions. These workers deserve a retirement system that recognizes their service and helps keep experienced officers on the job. I stand with my colleagues in the Senate who are working to finally get this bill across the finish line. Now it’s long past time for House Republicans to stand with Michigan workers and help us finish the job. These officers have waited long enough.”
