LANSING, Mich., Nov. 12, 2025 — The Michigan Library Association (MLA) has named state Rep. Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) its 2025 Legislator of the Year, recognizing her leadership in defending the freedom to read and strengthening public libraries for communities across Michigan. “I’m deeply honored,” Paiz said. “Libraries are one of our strongest civic defenses; they are places where truth is accessible, curiosity is encouraged and learning has no barriers. We must defend this institution, especially in a time of misinformation and division.” Paiz is a lead sponsor of the Freedom to Read Act (HBs 4250–51), introduced with state Rep. Carol Glanville (D-Walker). The legislation creates a clear and fair process for establishing library policies for challenges to books and other library materials in public libraries, protecting access to diverse viewpoints and affirming every person’s First Amendment right to information and to read freely, without censorship or intimidation. “When we protect access to books, we open a child’s world, we empower teenagers to explore challenging ideas and we defend every adult’s right to stay informed in a complicated world,” Paiz concluded. The MLA presents this award each year to lawmakers who demonstrate exceptional support for libraries, advocate for strong funding and champion their essential role in public life. The award ceremony was held on Oct. 29. ### |
