Paiz Recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month in Michigan

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 22, 2026 — State Rep. Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) introduced a resolution today recognizing Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, 2026, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Michigan.

“During this celebration, we create an opening for greater understanding and unity,” Paiz said. “Hispanic and Latino Americans share the same hopes, responsibilities, talents and ambitions as anyone else and contribute to our communities in equal measure. We want what people everywhere want: a safe home, a decent life and a fair shake in the society we share. By recognizing the history and culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans in Michigan, we also recognize the distinct experiences and shared humanity of our neighbors.”

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. President Johnson originated the observance in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week; it was later expanded to a monthlong celebration in 1988 and enacted into law in 1988. Sept. 15 also marks the anniversary of independence for a number of Central and South America including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, followed by the independence days of Mexico in North America and Chile on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

In Michigan, Hispanic and Latino residents have built businesses, created jobs, raised families and contributed across every part of life in the state. Paiz’s resolution recognizes those contributions in fields ranging from law, agriculture and education to technology, architecture, the arts and public service.
