Lansing, Mich., July 22, 2020 — State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) introduced House Resolution 297 today to declare August 2020 as Water Quality Month in the state of Michigan. The resolution also calls for the Legislature to prioritize the health and safety of all Michigan residents by developing meaningful water quality standards to preserve the state’s most precious natural resource. The resolution was adopted unanimously.

“Calling ourselves the Great Lakes State isn’t just some clever slogan, it’s a constant reminder of the tremendous responsibility we have as stewards of 90 percent of the nation’s surface freshwater,” said Pohutsky. “Millions of people rely on the water in and around Michigan each and every day, but we’ve too often fallen short of the high standard we must live up to. From lead in Flint to groundwater contamination in Livonia, far too many Michiganders have been forced to question the safety of the water coming out of their taps. Let’s use this Water Quality Month to recommit ourselves to ensuring that every Michigan family, no matter where they live, has access to the clean, safe water they need to thrive.”
