Dear Neighbor,
I hope you all have stayed warm despite the cold start to the year. As we move through February, I appreciate the chance to stay connected and share updates about the work happening in our community and at the Capitol. This month, we pause to recognize Black History Month and reflect on the lasting contributions that continue to shape our state and our shared future. We’re also heading into a busy budget season, with important conversations underway about priorities that directly affect our communities. Thank you for staying engaged and involved, it means a lot, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve you.
Please reach out to my office by phone at (517) 373-0823 or email at [email protected] for questions about this or any other state-level issue. You can follow me on Facebook to get regular legislative updates, too.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Let’s keep moving Michigan forward together!
In Service,

Community Conversation
Last month, my office hosted a Know Your Rights Town Hall. This event featured civil liberties experts as special guests. Together we shared essential information on what your rights are if you encounter ICE as an immigrant, a citizen, or a protestor.
This month, my office will host another town hall event on Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Royal Oak City Commission Chambers. This event will focus on mutual aid and feature special guest Royal Oak Mayor Michael Fournier and speakers from local mutual aid organizations. Together we will talk about what we can do to keep each other safe in the face of increased ICE interference in our communities.
Legislative & District Updates
Knocking On Your Doors
During the warm season, my team and I connected with thousands of residents across our district, engaging in meaningful conversations about our work in Lansing and the issues that matter most to you. These discussions covered a wide range of topics. from noise concerns on Woodward to education to the housing crisis.
Now that we are experiencing colder weather we have shifted our focus to our monthly community events. We will be back out knocking doors again in the spring. In the meantime you can reach us at our community events, at our office by phone at (517) 373-0823 or by email at [email protected].
The MI House Democrats Vision Project
We have concluded the survey portion of the MI House Democrats Vision Project! We will now begin the process of incorporating your feedback into our legislative agenda for when House Democrats retake the gavel. In a time when people often feel disconnected from the work of government, it is critical that public servants at all levels remain accountable to their electorate. If you have any questions about how your feedback will be used, please feel free to reach out to my office!
Legislation Update
In mid-February the governor’s team gave their executive recommendation for the FY 27 budget. We will shortly begin negotiating a budget that aims to serve all Michiganders. Your input is invaluable during this period!
Here are a few important pieces of legislation I’ve been championing this month to create real change for our communities:
- Protecting our Fourth Amendment right by amending our state constitution to prevent the federal government from using language about an “invasion” as pretext to suspend our right to a fair trial (HJR P, Rheingans);
- Amending our laws so that state legislators can visit any Department of Corrections facility at any time without notice (HB 4669, Pohutsky);
- Prohibiting any federal or state law enforcement officer from refusing to identify themselves or wearing a mask for any reason other than to prevent the spread of disease (HB 4760, Coffia);
- Prohibiting any state or local revenue from being used for activities that violate our right to due process (HBs 4942–4944, Arbit, McKinney & Breen);
- Protecting our First Amendment by prohibiting censorship and book bans at our libraries (HBs 4250–4251, Paiz & Glanville);
- Prohibiting the activity of any state or federal armed military force within Michigan without the permission of our governor (HB 4796, Pohutsky);
- And banning immigration enforcement from operating in protected places like churches and religious ceremonies, schools, hospitals and courthouses (HB 4859, Xiong).
Please note this is not an exhaustive list of all the issues my office is working on. Stay tuned for updates as we continue working on critical legislation.
State Updates & Resources
Students, MDE, State Board of Education celebrate Black History Month
This month students across our state celebrate Black History Month. Together we honor the history of our Black community members and acknowledge the work yet to be done. The presentation these students put on is a reminder that education on our nation’s history shouldn’t be limited strictly to the classroom.
EGLE’s new grants and loans dashboard shows money awarded to a number of sites throughout Berkley, Huntington Woods and Royal Oak. Tools like this one are instrumental in showing how work in Lansing translates into real change in our communities.
MDHHS and MDARD urge residents to use caution when buying and using pesticides
Spring is still many weeks away but homeowners, landscapers and gardeners should start thinking about what warm weather will mean for our health. MDHHS and MDARD are warning Michiganders about pesticide use. As the snow begins to melt, stay healthy and be mindful of what you choose to use in your yard or garden!
