LANSING, Mich., Feb. 26, 2026 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her final State of the State address before a joint legislative session yesterday evening, setting forth her priorities for the year ahead. With affordability concerns top of mind for many, the address was an opportunity for House Democrats to reflect on legislative successes that helped bring down costs and provide relief for Michiganders. Priority-focuses also narrowed in on the past and future legislative work on the cost of living, health care, education, jobs and safe neighborhoods.
After the address, state Rep. Natalie Price (D-Berkley) issued the following statement:
“It was excellent having Deborah Wahl join me yesterday evening for the Governor’s final State of the State address. Deborah’s work as board chair of Friends of Children in Detroit helps connect young people facing major challenges with mentors to support them from childhood through high school. Her work is truly inspiring and, as a former teacher, I know how important it is to give our kids the resources they need to succeed.
“It was especially meaningful to have Deborah with me as the governor highlighted education last night. I am particularly excited about specific funding for literacy programs, as well as teacher retention funds and continued free community college to expand educational opportunities for all Michiganders. Additionally, healthcare continues to be an issue top of mind for many, especially with cuts to Medicaid and Medicare at the federal level. We must protect Medicaid here in Michigan, and I will advocate to support our direct-care workers, provide our seniors necessary in-home care and ensure Michiganders can age peacefully and comfortably in place.”
