LANSING, Mich., April 30, 2026 — The U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision this week significantly weakening the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by requiring plaintiffs to prove intentional discrimination in redistricting cases, a change experts warn will make it far harder to challenge maps that dilute minority voting power. In response, state Rep. Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo) issued the following statement:
“Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais guts the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in an effort to suppress the votes of millions of Black and Brown Americans. With federal courts shirking their responsibility to protect voters, I will continue to fight to protect your freedom to vote. The only way to respond is to stay engaged and ensure voices are heard throughout the electoral process. We must continue working to protect every vote and uphold free and fair elections.”
