Proposed Plan ends majority-minority districts

DETROIT, Mich., Oct. 12, 2021 —  State Rep. Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit) gathered with members of the Detroit Caucus, labor leaders and faith leaders to speak as one voice against the current redistricting draft maps put forth by the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (ICRC). The maps carve up the state’s largest city, and between the Michigan House and Senate districts, the new maps would go from 17 majority-minority districts to zero.

“I appreciate the hard work the redistricting commission has done to end gerrymandering, but this plan dismantles African-American districts within the new redistricting plan,” Young said. “This is simply unacceptable. Detroiters are being treated as fillers to meet requirements for other districts.”

Young urged Detroiters to look at the draft maps and attend the ICRC public hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 1-3:30 p.m. at the TCF Center, 1 Washington Blvd. and again from 5-8 p.m. to voice their opinions.
