KALAMAZOO, Mich., Dec. 12, 2025 — This week, the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee voted to revoke nearly $645 million in previously approved work project funding, pulling back investments in health, safety and community programs across Michigan. The cuts include $18.5 million from the Rx Kids maternal and infant health program, funding that supports children with cancer and resources that help seniors, families and other vulnerable communities access food and health care. In response, state Rep. Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo), a member of the House Appropriations Committee and minority vice chair of the Appropriations subcommittees on Medicaid and Behavioral Health and on Veterans and Military Affairs, issued the following statement: “The Republicans’ decision to pull back $645 million in previously approved funding reflects a troubling disregard for the commitments made to Michigan communities. The cuts affect programs like Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids, which helps children with cancer cope with treatment by providing wigs at no cost; jeopardize maternal and infant health resources like the Rx Kids program, which has successfully supported Kalamazoo families during pregnancy and a child’s earliest months; threaten mental health services for young survivors of sexual assault; and even cut funding for veterans’ programs.” “This is simply wrong and cruel. Nearly $645 million in public investments, built over multiple budget cycles with bipartisan support, was undone in a single committee vote. Communities were promised these dollars, and there is still time for the Republican House leadership to reverse and correct this decision.” |
