▩ Press Release KALAMAZOO, Mich., Sept. 19, 2025 — This week, state Reps. Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo) and Greg VanWoerkom (R-Norton Shores) announced the introduction of House Bills 4998 and 4999, bipartisan legislation to create the Michigan Nonprofit Development Fund. The fund would provide interest-free micro bridge loans to nonprofit and arts organizations across Michigan, helping them cover temporary funding gaps and keep their doors open to the public. “I am excited to offer a creative solution to support our nonprofit and arts community during a time of uncertainty,” Rogers said. “Our bipartisan bill package offers a no interest loan to help with their cash flow so they can keep artists and staff employed and maintain operations. This economic development tool will shore up funding gaps while ensuring our theatres, art galleries and museums remain open for all to enjoy.” The Michigan Nonprofit Development Fund would allow qualifying nonprofit organizations to borrow up to $25,000 interest-free. These loans would provide nonprofits with annual revenues under $1 million with the short-term support they need to continue serving the public in health, education, arts, culture and social services. Borrowers would repay once their grant funds are received. “This bill is a timely boost for Michigan’s creative sector. It adds flexibility and support as arts and culture organizations navigate alternative funding. It helps keep programs vibrant and communities inspired,” said the Cultural Advocacy Network of Michigan. Rogers and VanWoerkom are working with stakeholders across the state to build bipartisan support and secure state funding for the program. If approved, the Michigan Nonprofit Development Fund will strengthen the state’s arts and nonprofit sector, providing stability and opportunity for organizations that enrich communities in every corner of Michigan. Both bills were referred to the Michigan House Economic Competitiveness Committee for consideration. |
