Press Release | Office of State Rep. Julie Rogers

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 4, 2026 — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives adopted HR 237, a bipartisan resolution authored by state Rep. Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo) declaring February 2026 as American Heart Month in Michigan. The resolution will help raise awareness about the devastating impacts of heart disease and encourage Michiganders to take steps to protect their heart health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans with one person dying from heart disease every 34 seconds.

“As a practicing health care provider, I’ve seen how heart disease can affect someone’s  ability to do everyday activities,” Rogers said. “American Heart Month is a reminder to take heart health seriously and to make time for prevention, early care, and support. Even small actions over time, like adding more steps and fresh fruits and vegetables, can make a real difference. And if you don’t know your risk factor numbers, schedule a visit with your health care provider to learn more.”

Legislators wore red in support of the resolution and the American Heart Association National Wear Red Day movement, which raises awareness about the clinical care gaps women face in the fight against cardiovascular disease. Pregnancy and menopause can put women at an increased risk, yet many women go without care that could help optimize their cardiovascular health.

“When the state Legislature honors Wear Red Day, it sends a clear message that heart health — especially the health of women — is a public priority. Awareness saves lives, and leadership makes awareness possible,” said Jana Siminski, the executive director for the American Heart Association in West Michigan. “Heart disease kills more women every year than all forms of cancer combined. This staggering statistic is why it’s so crucial that our elected leaders help amplify our message to the entire state of Michigan.”
