LANSING, Mich., March 18, 2026 – Today, state Rep. Will Snyder (D-Muskegon) introduced House Bill 5764. This bipartisan legislation would allow consumers to install a “plug-in” balcony solar system with an output of up to 1,200 watts without the burdensome requirements associated with large rooftop solar systems, such as interconnection agreements.
“Many individuals and groups from across Michigan have reached out to my office in support of plug-in solar,” Snyder said. “We’re going to protect our environment, while also bringing down energy costs for everyday Michiganders.”
Depending on the size of their home and other factors, consumers utilizing plug-in solar could see up to a 20% reduction in their energy costs, based on similar plug-in solar devices used elsewhere. Last year, Utah became the first state in the nation to enact such a law, and over 24 states have proposed legislation to legalize these systems.
Snyder hopes that Michigan will follow Utah’s lead, making it easier for Michiganders across the state to make changes that are efficient and environmentally-friendly without having to endure excessive red tape.
“I really think there’s a path for this bill to become law,” Snyder added. “Whether you’re environmentally-conscious or simply would like to power your own home without jumping through hoops, this bill has something for everyone.”
