LANSING, Mich., Dec. 12, 2025 — House Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee voted to disapprove more than $644 million in previously authorized FY 2025 work project funding, including over $351 million in state General Fund dollars, from programs that directly affect communities across Michigan. Some of the cuts include $159.3 million from ‘Make it in Michigan’ competitiveness grants, $102.6 million from community enhancement grants and $63.5 million from infrastructure grants.
After voting no on the Republican cuts, state Rep. Will Snyder (D-Muskegon) who sits on the House Appropriations committee, released the following statement:
“This week’s vote was one of the most corrupt abuses of power and unprecedented displays of cruelty I’ve ever seen during my time in Lansing. House Republicans compiled this enormous list of cuts and coerced their members until they voted for it. Then, they distributed the summary document, giving us mere minutes to review before abruptly calling the committee to order and moving directly to a vote — all of this with zero discussion and zero transparency.
“House Republicans’ unprecedented move cuts $644 million from programs impacting babies, laborers, seniors, veterans, teachers; just about every group of people, in every corner of our state. This was not about Democrats vs. Republicans. Our entire state and every Michigander will feel the pain of these cruel actions.
“The procedure for denying work projects has existed since the creation of the modern appropriations system was set out in the Management and Budget Act of 1984, but it was never intended to be used this way.
I’ve submitted a bill request to change this procedure to require both chambers to approve before critical funds are cut like we saw this week.
“I come to Lansing and I fight for the people of Michigan every day, and every day I get dressed thinking about those who cannot advocate for themselves. Every day I try to make Michigan better. I used to think that even the colleagues I disagreed with felt the same, but now I am starting to question that. One thing is for sure though — I will not stop working for Michiganders.”
