LANSING, Mich., May 14, 2026 — The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) approved a $481,267 grant to the City of Muskegon for improvements and expansions at the Muskegon Farmers Market. The final approvals were completed this week at Muskegon’s city commission meeting. This grant will partially fund the expansion and updates for the indoor market and Kitchen 242.

“Since its construction ten years ago, the Muskegon Farmers Market has been a catalyst for development and change,” said state Rep. Will Snyder (D-Muskegon). “I am excited by this project and how it will further transform our community.”

In the coming weeks, the city will launch a community fundraising drive for this project.

“The City of Muskegon is appreciative that these state funds will support 100+ food-based small businesses annually, drive substantial seasonal foot traffic to downtown Muskegon, circulate federal nutrition assistance dollars directly to local farmers, serve as an entry point for emerging food entrepreneurs, and strengthen the West Michigan regional food system,” said Muskegon Mayor Ken Johnson.

This investment, built on proven demand, will allow Kitchen 242 and the barn to support more vendors, increase year-round food production, and strengthen the market’s role as an economic and food access hub.

“Connecting our community with state resources is one of the best parts of the job,” Snyder added. “I am proud of all the work that made this happen.”
