State of the State, governor’s budget recommendations and what this means for our communities
E-newsletter | Feb. 27, 2026 | Office of State Rep. Tyrone Carter
Dear Neighbor,
Yesterday, the governor delivered her State of the State address, following the release of her executive budget recommendations. Now, the Legislature begins the hard work of reviewing, negotiating and shaping a final budget in the months ahead. By law, we must pass a budget by July 1.
As that process moves forward, I remain focused on fighting for priorities that matter to our community:
- Property tax relief, especially for our elders on fixed incomes, to help people stay in their homes and manage rising costs.
- Equitable funding for school districts that have been historically underfunded, so students in every community receive the resources they deserve.
- Serious literacy investments, including expanded tutoring, early learning support and teacher training, to address reading challenges and strengthen long-term student success.
- Protecting health care access, including defending Medicaid from harmful federal cuts tied to the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which could shift significant costs onto states and threaten coverage for working families, older adults and people with disabilities.
- Public safety investments that support first responders, violence prevention efforts and safer neighborhoods across our region.
This budget year will not be easy. With economic uncertainty and competing priorities, it will take steady leadership and collaboration to get it right. My commitment is to approach these negotiations with a clear focus on affordability, fairness and protecting the people I serve.
I was also proud to welcome River Rogue Mayor William Campbell as my guest to the State of the State. His presence reflected the strong partnership between state and local leaders as we work together to deliver real results for District 1 families. |
