Lawmaker optimistic about Michigan’s direction

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 24, 2024 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered this year’s State of the State address today before a joint legislative session. In her speech, the governor discussed her agenda for the new term, which includes lowering costs for Michiganders, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the state’s economy. State Rep. Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement on Whitmer’s address:

A State of the State quote graphic for Michigan State Representative Samantha Steckloff. Above a picture of Rep. Steckloff, her quote reads, "The volume and quality of work that my Democratic colleagues and I accomplished last year has set Michigan on the right track."

“The volume and quality of work that my Democratic colleagues and I accomplished last year has set Michigan on the right track. From protecting reproductive freedoms and making health care more affordable to lowering costs for workers, families and seniors, 2023 was a historic year, and we’re not hitting the brakes. Combined with a budget surplus, there is so much more we can achieve, and I can’t wait to get to work.”

Over the last year, lawmakers have laid a foundation for Michigan by putting people first. The fundamental building blocks include repealing the retirement tax, increasing the Working Families Tax Credit (EITC), funding free breakfast and lunch to public school kids, improving anti-discrimination laws and so much more.
