Democratic lawmaker secures school lunches, roads funding and key infrastructure improvements for the Lansing community
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 6, 2025 — Today, the Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets. After refusing to back down in budget negotiations to defend critical Medicaid, food assistance and education funding, House Democrats voted for a bipartisan budget that reflects Michigan’s priorities. The state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, protects access to affordable health care and SNAP benefits and funds universal school meals, transportation and mental health resources that kids depend on.
After the vote, state Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou (D-East Lansing) issued the following statement:
“After months of waiting, we finally have a budget deal done. It’s not great that it took this long, and schools had to start their years in the dark, but I’m glad we were able to do the hard work of negotiating on behalf of Michiganders. We secured critical investments in our infrastructure, like $750,000 to repair the Lake Lansing Dam which badly needs repairs and serves a crucial public purpose in flood prevention. We also invested in our roads and bridges, our schools and hospitals, all to make Michigan a place where families can put down roots and thrive.”
