Dear Neighbor, Today marks the beginning of the State of Michigan’s new fiscal year. The budget is still being finalized, but the legislature passed a continuation budget very early this morning. The governor signed it earlier today, ensuring state government will continue to operate to Oct. 8. The continuation does not directly affect public schools, which have a separate budget. Lansing and Holt school districts will continue to operate and provide universal school meals to students during this time. This gives additional time for wrapping up details and getting hundreds of pages of necessary legislation drafted and reviewed. There is still a lot of work to do, but I’m glad that state government will continue in the meantime. As I’ve mentioned before, this budget process is the weirdest I’ve seen in my seven years in the House. The governor and Senate have had their budgets ready for months. House leadership passed their budget on Aug. 26, which is the latest I’ve seen a chamber of the Legislature pass their initial budget. House Democrats are committed to supporting a fair budget that protects schools, health care, and our state government. I look forward to sharing more information as it becomes available.
