Executive Budget Recommendation

Michigan state Representative Amos O'Neal speaking at the executive budget recommendation Appropriations Committee meeting.

This week, I was excited to hear the governor’s FY 2027 executive budget recommendation.

As the budget process begins, I am focused on lowering costs, investing in education, protecting Medicaid and delivering relief to families in my district and the entire state. Too many people have seen costs continue to rise faster than their paychecks, and too many families are stretched thin. Housing, health care and utility bills are taking up a bigger share of household budgets, and this year’s state budget must meet people where they are. That means staying focused on affordability and delivering real stability for working families across our state.

The Republican Congress and administration, through H.R. 1 (“One Big Beautiful Bill Act”), has created real financial difficulties for the State of Michigan’s balance sheet. We face a tough year ahead, and one thing is certain: Michiganders cannot afford another late budget. Failing to pass a budget on time creates real consequences: schools struggle to hire teachers, districts face costly debts and local governments are left unable to plan. Michiganders deserve better. Our responsibility is to pass a budget by June 30 that puts students, workers and communities first. I am hopeful that this year will be much different than last year and will continue to fight for funding in Saginaw as a member of the Appropriations Committee.
