Dear Neighbor,
I wanted to share a quick update on the work happening in Lansing and here at home.
Over the past few weeks, my team and I have spent time across the district, not just in meetings, but out in the community, listening and showing up.
At Huron High School, we sat down with government students to talk about public service and hear how they’re thinking about the future. At Moonwinks Cafe, we held a community coffee hour with special guests Superior Township Supervisor Emily Dabish Yahkind and Treasurer Lisa Lewis.
We recognized local leaders making a difference, including Aisha Bowles, an inspiring WCC and UM graduate who made history last year as one of the first black women to fly to space. And like so many across the state, we celebrated the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball championship run, a moment that brought people together across Michigan.

This is a reminder of the talent, energy and pride in this community, and why hard work matters.

The Budget: Where Priorities Become Real
Right now, there’s a lot of focus on the state budget. This is where the biggest decisions get made for Michigan and where our priorities turn into action.
My goal is to deliver a budget that:
- Supports our public schools.
- Invests in infrastructure and transit.
- Protects health care access, including Medicaid.
- Sustains the services families rely on.
I’ve also pushed to bring resources directly back to our district, with funding requests that support:
- Fire safety improvements across local communities.
- Workforce training and education programs at Washtenaw Community College and the University of Michigan.
- Local election administration, so our democracy continues to run smoothly and securely.
If you’re doing your part, the system should be working for you. Our state budget is one of the clearest ways to make that real.
What We’re Working On
Right now, my focus is clear on what we need to do for our state’s future:
- Increase the supply of attainable housing.
- Ban the shady corporate practices that price people out of the market.
- Continue record investments in our schools, infrastructure and transit.
- Strengthen transparency and accountability in government.
The goal of any leader shouldn’t be to manage a system that isn’t working; it should be to fix it.
Focused on Local Issues
Alongside the work in Lansing, I’m paying attention to the real challenges people are facing here at home.
UM / BCBS Contract Dispute
There is real concern from patients and providers about the ongoing contract dispute between the Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan) and Blue Cross Blue Shield. This kind of uncertainty around health care isn’t acceptable. Conversations are ongoing with patients, physicians and both institutions, while pushing for a resolution that protects access to the care people depend on.
Stopping Arbor Hills Landfill Expansion
Work continues alongside residents in Northville, Plymouth and Salem Townships who are pushing back against a proposed new landfill in the community. This decision would ultimately be made by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners in the coming months, and ensuring community voices are heard remains critical.
Cleaning Up the Gelman Dioxane Plume
There is real progress being made, with the U.S. EPA adding the Gelman Dioxane Plume to the National Priorities List, a major step toward long-overdue cleanup. During my time as Chair of the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, I worked alongside U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell to help bring all four impacted local governments together to push for this designation. That collaboration helped make this moment possible, and now the focus is on getting it fully cleaned up.
The Bigger Picture
The truth is, the old version of the American Dream isn’t working for too many people anymore. So the question isn’t whether we go back; it’s whether we build something better.
That’s the work in front of us, and I’m committed to it every day.
If you ever need help, have a question or want to share what you’re seeing on the ground, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re in this together.
In solidarity,

Jason Morgan
State Representative
Michigan’s 23rd House District
