Democratic lawmaker secures key investments for working families, protects public education and funds necessary infrastructure improvements for Ypsilanti
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 6, 2025 — Last week, the Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets. After refusing to back down in budget negotiations to defend critical Medicaid, food assistance and education funding, House Democrats voted for a bipartisan budget that reflects Michigan’s priorities. The state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, protects access to affordable health care and SNAP benefits and funds universal school meals, transportation and mental health resources that kids depend on.
After the vote, State Rep. Jimmie Wilson, Jr (D-Ypsilianti) issued the following statement:
“I can’t imagine a worse process to get this budget done. Republicans missed the July 1 deadline, forcing our schools to start their years in the dark, unveiled their horrible budget months late, waited until the very last minute to even begin negotiations and passed a budget after the deadline. It was all extremely frustrating, but I am proud of the hard work my Democratic colleagues and I put in to get a budget that works for Michigan’s working families.
“We protected critical money for Medicaid and SNAP, supported our schools and hospitals and made critical investments in our infrastructure, like the $3 million I was able to secure for the Cross Street Bridge in Ypsilianti. Every step of the way, I fought for working families and that is what true leadership is about — putting people over politics.”
