Legislation would allow public schools to excuse student absences for Future Farmers of America, 4-H club and other agricultural learning program events
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 24, 2025 — State Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Twp.) celebrated the House’s passage of her bill yesterday to better support student participation in Future Farmers of America (FFA) and other agricultural organization events. House Bill 4665 would allow for a public school to excuse a student’s absence if they are attending a scheduled competition, exhibition or event offered by the national or Michigan FFA organization, a 4-H club or any other agricultural organization approved by the school board. The bill would ensure the FFA events are considered an educational resource for students, opening more doors to entry in Michigan’s agricultural industry.
“FFA and similar organizations provide opportunities to young people across Michigan to gain the training and leadership skills they need to grow into the next generation of agricultural workers,” Witwer said. “My bill ensures that kids can participate in these events and explore careers in farming and agriculture without being penalized with unexcused absences on their attendance records.”
Despite agriculture being one of Michigan’s top three industries, contributing over $100 billion annually to the state’s economy, less than 3% of college students in Michigan are pursuing a degree in agriculture — a prerequisite that 81% of agricultural jobs in the state require.
“My bill is about opening doors for students to learn about the agricultural careers available to them, ensuring the future of Michigan’s farms and agriculture workforce,” Witwer continued. “Participating in agricultural programs like those FFA offers also helps students develop their critical thinking and teamwork skills, helping them build confidence as young professionals. I will continue to advocate for agricultural education and careers, and I look forward to seeing this bill move onto the Senate for a vote.”
