State lawmaker secured millions to uplift senior community building and resources in Eaton County

DELTA TWP., Mich., Sept. 29, 2025 — State Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Twp.) joined Delta Township and Waverly Schools officials and community members for the groundbreaking for the new Delta Township Senior Center. As chair of the House Appropriations Committee last term, Witwer championed $10 million for the much-anticipated project, which will house already popular senior events and programming currently held at the Delta Enrichment Center.

“From the moment I first ran for office, I have been working to make this idea a reality for our community, and I am beyond excited for the benefits this center will bring to our seniors and their families,” Witwer said. “This project is truly an example of how state leaders can ensure people’s tax dollars come back to their own communities, and I am proud to have seen through this project that will help build Eaton County into a vibrant environment for all ages. It’s beyond exciting to see the impact that this new center will have for our seniors and their loved ones.”

Witwer, who has long been an advocate for investing in increased access to care and recreation for the aging population of Eaton County, spoke alongside community leaders at the event, including Waverly Superintendent Glenn Mitcham, Delta Township Supervisor Fonda Brewer and Paula Cunningham, State Director of AARP Michigan.

“This project is a beautiful example of what can happen when state government and community schools work together,” Mitcham said. “When we trust each other, everybody wins — there are no down sides to this project. I’m excited not only for our senior citizens who will benefit from this Senior and Activities Center, but also for the students, families and staff at Colt Early Childhood Education Center. This partnership has so much potential.”

“Our aging and structurally deficient enrichment center was no longer adequate to best serve our community,” Brewer said. “This project gives Delta the opportunity to provide our seniors with a safe, clean facility with expanded amenities and room to grow. It’s a wonderful example of multi-agency collaboration. Delta Township, Waverly Community Schools, Representative Witwer and Senator Anthony worked very hard to make this a reality and achieve multiple goals in the most cost-effective way for the Delta and Waverly communities!”

“AARP Michigan is proud of the attention being given to older adults in Delta Township to help create a more age friendly community and to increase their quality of life,” Cunningham said. “The Delta Township Senior Center will help ensure older adults not only stay in our community, but thrive there. Across Michigan, older adults give back every day — whether by starting small businesses, caring for grandkids, or volunteering in their neighborhoods. When our older neighbors are connected and thriving, the whole community thrives.”

Delta Township’s senior community members, their loved ones and the students, families and staff of the Colt Early Childhood Education Center have been long awaiting the new center, with many showing up to support the groundbreaking. The new designated space for older adults and their communities will offer programming, bingo lunches, a variety of classes and opportunities to spend time with friends and neighbors while playing cards, working on puzzles or participating in other games.

“I am thrilled to see this project come to life for our seniors and the entire Delta Township community,” said state Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing). “This is an excellent example of what we can accomplish when we work together across sectors — from government to education to human services. I was proud to champion this investment through the budget process alongside Rep. Witwer and our partners in the Waverly School District, and I look forward to seeing the impact the final product will have on our region.”

“Our team is honored to partner with Delta Township and Waverly Schools on this deeply impactful community project,” said Ed Talaga, project manager with design firm TowerPinkster. “The new senior center is thoughtfully designed to be welcoming, flexible and supportive of a wide range of programs and activities. We’re excited to see this space come to life and to know it will be a place where neighbors can connect, learn and thrive for years to come.”

“Barton Malow is proud to partner with Waverly Community Schools and collaborate with Delta Township on a project that will serve as a cornerstone for the community’s seniors,” said Mike Stobak, Vice President of Education of Barton Malow Builders. “This facility represents an investment in the future of families and neighbors by providing a dedicated space for connection, care and recreation. We’re honored to help bring this much-anticipated center to life.”
