Witwer Introduces Michigan Indian Week Resolution, Honors Legislative Tribal Liaison

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 24, 2026 — State Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Twp.) introduced and spoke to her resolution declaring Sept. 25-Oct. 1, 2026, as Michigan Indian Week in the State of Michigan. This week recognizes the significant contributions of Indigenous Michiganders and emphasizes state partnership with the twelve federally recognized tribal nations who share Michigan’s border.

“It is my honor to introduce and speak to the Michigan Indian Week resolution to honor Michigan’s twelve federally recognized tribes and encourage all Michiganders to learn more about their rich cultures and significant contributions,” Witwer said. “As we reflect on our shared history, this week is also about recommitting to working in partnership with tribal nations to improve the lives of our shared citizens and take care of our Great Lakes state.”

Jamie Stuck, tribal legislative liaison in the Michigan Office of the Tribal Legislative Liaison, assisted in drafting the resolution on behalf of the twelve federally recognized tribal nations and accompanied Witwer onto the House floor during the speech. Witwer also recognized Yvonne Fronczak, her constituent services staffer and a resident of the 76th House District who is a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians.

“Last term, I proudly voted to create the Office of the Tribal Legislative Liaison in the Legislature — we are the first state in the nation to establish a legislative office for tribal consultation,” Witwer continued. “The working partnership between legislators and our tribal liaisons is truly invaluable, and necessary to ensure laws are made thoughtfully with tribal nations’ sovereignty and health as a top priority. I was honored to recognize and thank Jamie Stuck in this role, as well as my constituent services staffer and great friend Yvonne.”
