Lawmaker secures continued free breakfast and lunch for all students and financial relief for Michigan families
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 16, 2025 — The Michigan Legislature recently passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets. After refusing to back down in budget negotiations to defend food assistance, public safety and maternal health care funding, state Rep. Mai Xiong (Warren) voted for a bipartisan budget that reflects Michigan’s priorities. The state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, helps protect access to Medicaid and SNAP benefits and funds universal school meals, transportation and mental health resources that kids depend on.
In response to the budget’s passage, Xiong issued the following statement:
“As a mom of young kids, I know how important public libraries are to developing young minds. It was my honor to bring home $500,000 for the new children’s area, accessibility features and more community learning spaces in the St. Clair Shores Library.
“I have been clear from the beginning of this budget process that providing universal school meals, investing in maternal health care and helping to protect SNAP and Medicaid are nonnegotiable. This budget supports the priorities that matter most to Michiganders, but the work to protect Michigan from cuts at the federal level is not over — I will continue standing up to deliver real relief to Michigan’s families.”
The fiscal year 2025-26 budget includes several budget wins for Michigan and Macomb County specifically, including:
- $200 million for universal school meals.
- $129 million for clean energy grants to local governments.
- $75 million for direct care worker wages.
- $26 million for Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
- $25 million for grants to local firefighters and prosecutors.
- $900,000 for improvements to Warren 911 dispatch.
- $800,000 for Roseville Schools science facility.
- $800,000 for Lake St. Clair clean-up.
- $500,000 for renovations to the St. Clair Shores Library
- $500,000 for the maternal infant health program.
