LANSING, Mich., Dec. 18, 2025 — This week, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) joined colleagues from the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and Asian Pacific American Caucus in a joint press conference to stand united in condemning nearly $645 million in House Republican work project clawbacks. The funding was unilaterally disapproved by Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee last week, creating uncertainty for the future of previously approved state programs, services and projects meant to improve the lives of Michiganders.
After the press conference, Xiong issued the following statement:
“The reckless actions of House Republicans do not make your taxes go down. They do not put money back into your pockets. This money is going back into the state general fund. And the government will continue to collect your taxes while Republicans are taking this money and squirreling it away.
“You better bet that come January 2026, the Speaker expects all of these departments, non-profits, organizations and local governments to come back and beg him for this money. He even admitted during his press conference that some of these programs were not even ‘waste, fraud or abuse’. But he still cut them anyway. So what problem is he trying to solve here? He orchestrated this crisis and now he wants to pretend to be the hero.”
