State Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) testifies in committee.

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 30, 2026 — Yesterday, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) testified before the Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee in support of Senate Bills 508510. This legislative package aims to protect Michiganders from ICE and has companion legislation in the House of Representatives. One of the companion bills is House Bill 4859, sponsored by Xiong, which would ensure ICE and other agencies conducting immigration enforcement cannot arrest people in places of worship, educational institutions, hospitals and other prohibited locations.

After testifying before the Senate Committee, Xiong released the following statement:

“I am grateful to Senate Democrats for championing this legislation to keep ICE accountable. With these bills, we have the power to take back control of the safety of Michigan families. ICE is making Americans feel unsafe. Michiganders should be able to go about their daily lives without fear that they do not have the proper documentation with them. When a child is in school, their focus should be on learning, not whether ICE might break down their classroom door. When healthcare workers are caring for patients or family members are visiting the hospital, they should not have to worry about ICE ripping their loved one away. Everyone deserves due process — not chaos or confusion. I will continue to do everything in my power to keep families together and our communities safe.”
