State lawmaker meets with returning Michigan resident and refugee after hard-fought battle for his safe return

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec. 3, 2025 — As Lue Yang arrived in Grand Rapids today, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) joined Yang’s wife, Ann Vue, and family in welcoming him back home. The warm welcome marked a victory in a months-long, hard-fought battle on the parts of Yang’s family, Xiong and fellow state lawmakers to urge federal officials, the public and the media to locate Yang and urge the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to return him to his family safely.

In celebration of Yang’s return home, Xiong issued the following statement:

“I am grateful to welcome home Mr. Lue Yang, a long-time member of Michigan’s Hmong community, family man and relentless public servant who has dedicated his life to lifting up others. Lue came to the United States as a child refugee and has been contributing greatly to our state since he legally arrived in the U.S. seeking asylum decades ago. This battle for justice and due process for him and his family has been hard-fought, and I am so happy to see him reunited with his loving family, community and home state in time for the holiday season. While there are still many members of our community that have been detained by ICE recently, his release today brings hope to so many immigrant families who are still awaiting their loved ones’ return home.”
