Democratic lawmaker secures funding for Brightmoor Connection and Wayne County community

LANSING, Mich., Oct. 3, 2025 — The Michigan Legislature passed the final FY 2025-26 General and School Aid budgets. There is no question this budget process has been unusual, but House Democrats remained committed and steadfast in their resolve to protect Democratic values: Medicaid, food assistance and education funding. This state budget provides relief to Michiganders harmed by Republican cuts in the federal so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, protects access to affordable health care and SNAP benefits and funds universal school meals, transportation and mental health resources that kids depend on.

After the vote, state Rep. Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“House Democrats did the work, and now we are delivering the results. These budgets make investments into the programs we have long fought for — from food assistance and health care protections, continued funding to help at-risk youth and dedicated community violence intervention and the largest per pupil investment in our state’s history. I am particularly proud to have secured $300,000 for the Brightmoor Connection, a food and community resource in Detroit that has been a lifeline for countless families. This funding will strengthen their ability to fight hunger and uplift the clients they serve — and I’m honored to bring these resources home.”
