Today is a magical moment of hope and promise.

Happy First Day of School!

I hope students, parents, teachers, administrators and everyone involved with our youth and their education have a great day today! Good luck in the new school year: grow, get even smarter, be kind, and enjoy!

Sixty years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law, creating two pillars of the American healthcare system.

Since then, these programs have helped ensure that millions of older adults, children, people with disabilities, and low-income families can get the care they need.

The legacy of Medicare and Medicaid is clear and powerful: no one should be denied healthcare because of who they are or what they earn.

Today, I toured the Boston Square Early Learning Center. They are getting ready to open their new childcare facility — for infants through toddlers — this September. The team is getting ready, outfitting classrooms and training teachers to be ready for their first day of classes. At full capacity, the Center will be able to educate and support 72 children from around the metro area.

The Boston Square Early Learning Center will provide a welcoming, culturally-responsive learning environment where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. It’s an impressive new asset for our community.

Michigan needs to take all measures possible to ensure that childcare centers, such as the BSQ-ELC, are available, affordable, and nearby. Our children, and their parents and caregivers, are counting on us to prioritize their development.

Congratulations to Kentwood Public Schools on being selected to receive the 2025 Breakfast Trailblazer Award from the United States Department of Agriculture! This is a well-earned award in recognition of Kentwood Public School's commitment to serving healthy meals for breakfast and to including student voices in decision-making. When news broke that Michigan children were being exploited at work in our community, I took action to protect our kids. Last year, I passed a bill to streamline the antiquated youth work permitting process. I’m excited to announce that the Governor signed the bill into law in January.

I’m working every day to ensure Michigan’s children are safe everywhere, in their schools, neighborhoods or on the job.

Three years after Roe fell, we remember the rights and health care that have been lost and recommit to protecting what we’ve built. Michigan will not go backward. We’re defending reproductive rights for all, no matter what extremists try next. ... See MoreSee Less

This June, we celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month by honoring the stories of generations of immigrants and recognizing their invaluable contributions to our communities.

Now more than ever, we need to uplift the legacy and future of immigrant communities. I am committed to continuing to work to support Michigan’s immigrant communities and to fight for inclusive policies.
