I concur with my colleague. Today’s action is a major betrayal by Governor Whitmer.Today, the Michigan Supreme Court declined to take up Senate v. House upholding the Court of Appeals’ ruling that the nine bills previously passed by both chambers, but never presented now must go to the Governor’s desk.
However, the Governor has sided with the House Republicans and vetoed all nine bills.
Today is both a day of victory and disappointment.
Today’s ruling is a major victory for the Legislature and the people of Michigan. It was clear this was an unfair and illegal method of interference with the legislature and its processes.
That excitement is tampered by the profound disappointment that the Governor has decided to side with the House Republicans and veto these bills. She has always hesitated to take a supportive position, which could be why they were not transmitted to begin with. This is a tragic result for Michigan’s democracy and the people of Michigan.

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to participate as a fellow in the Transatlantic Inclusion Leadership Network (TILN) sponsored by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. A diverse cohort of about 20 or so amazing young leaders from across the U.S. and Europe gathered to discuss the future of the Transatlantic Alliance, democracy, human rights, equity, and so much else. The conversations were deep, heavy, and at times emotional — we were unflinching in delving into some of thorniest global issues, from AI to poverty to Palestine. But I honestly left feeling healed and optimistic about our future. There are so many amazing young people doing amazing things for our world against the difficult odds. We are the leaders we are waiting for. I’m so thankful to have had this opportunity and to have met so many wonderful people. 🩵🩵🩵 ... See MoreSee Less

Today, we were able to pass legislation to keep the 48th District Court (covering West Bloomfield, Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake, Sylvan Lake, Bloomfield, and Birmingham) functioning with three full-time judges, amending a statute that would have removed one of our judge slots. With a heavy case load, reducing the number of judges at the 48th would have significantly impaired the work of justice in our community. I’m very grateful to State Rep. Donni Steele for successfully sponsoring this legislation. A rare win for bipartisanship in these divided times! 😎 ... See MoreSee Less

Today, I testified in committee to support my $1.3 Million dollar funding request for the Brock Street Reconstruction Project in Keego Harbor. This project is deserving of state funding — the street is in structural failure and close to collapsing into the canal leading to Cass Lake. It’s been a serious hazard for two decades, but with Keego Harbor’s stretched budget, finding the money to fix it has been a challenge. I’ll always fight to secure state funding for vital infrastructure projects across West Bloomfield, Commerce, and the Lakes. ... See MoreSee Less
