Busy Saturday! First, my Financial Literacy Town Hall. IPresenters spoke about budgeting, differences between credit unions and banks and community banks, understanding credit scores and how to build credit, budget tips, buying your home and ownership tips. Audience questions included landlord - tenant issues, property taxes, language barriers, foreclosures and more. Big thanks to Lauren Waldis and Sarah James from Christian Financial Credit Union; Josh Bennett from Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union; Marc Reenau from First State Bank in Clinton Twp. First State Bank - Michigan; and Anne Sergant and Javon Shamily from the Detroit Financial Empowerment Center at Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency.

Wrapped it all up as a panelist on developing a legislative agenda for Detroit's City Council District 4 -- other panelists included Detroit City Councilperson for District 4 Councilmember Latisha Johnson - District 4, Senator Stephanie Chang, Wayne County Commissioner District 2 @commissioner, State Representative Kimberly Edwards of HD 12 @repkimberlyedwards and Rep. Joe Tate from HD 9.

Our Vice President is a <insert derogatory word> without any knowledge of history and the sacrifices Greenland has made as an ally of the U.S. 😡 Add to that, it’s a shameful way to talk to the people and leadership of another country. Infuriating. ... See MoreSee Less

This afternoon, Senator Kevin Hertel and I hosted a lunch and legislative update with residents of a local senior apartment complex. They had lots of good questions and serious concerns — social security, housing costs (their rent is subsidized by HUD), and food costs to name a few. They are upset about a lack of information about what (or if) some services will be available for them or even a timeline. They wanted to know what they could do to voice their concerns (letters and phone calls!). Senator Hertel and I plan to visit again in a few months, with answers and strategies. Financial Literacy Town Hall... THIS IS SO SMART! So many people, myself included, are confused or are just not aware. Good on you, V!!

On Monday, State Representatives from the Agriculture Committee and Detroit Caucus toured the BetterMade production facilities to learn about the importance of agriculture and potatoes 🥔. Quick facts: Better Made uses 250k - 300k pounds of potatoes every day; it takes only 7 minutes from when the potatoes fall off the truck to the finished chip; along the way, potato starch is extracted and sold and the skins will eventually become animal feed; those numbers below the bag price can trace the potatoes in there back to the grower (who can then trace it back to the bin they used); in 1930s, there were 21 potato chip factories in Detroit and only Better Made survived (celebrating its 95th anniversary). Michigan is the “chipping potato” capital! One out of 4 potato chip bags sold in the U.S. have Michigan potatoes (Better Made uses only Michigan potatoes). Now, consider all the Michigan jobs which enable a potato chip to work its way to your mouth! Yum 😋 seed growers, field labor, farmers, truck drivers, plant workers, equipment manufacturing and sales, store owners and workers…. The first photo is Representative Jerry Neyer, Chair of the House Agriculture Committee, and me (Minority Vice Chair) and the last is a group photo of us legislators. Photos in between are of the production process. @bettermade1930 BetterMe Rep.
