With more than 40,000 of our neighbors relying on Medicaid, I’m taking proactive steps to prepare our community for the impacts of the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” At the Michigan Association of Health Plans conference, I met with national experts to address changes like new Medicaid work requirements, threats to funding for family planning and cancer screenings, and rising costs for essential medications.
Health care isn’t a privilege — it’s a necessity. My office has published a six-point Medicaid preparedness checklist to help families navigate these changes, and we’re here to answer questions. I’ll keep fighting to make sure no one in House District 53 is left behind.

For years, I’ve fought to make sure every child in Michigan — from right here in Pontiac to across our state — has a safe, stable, and supportive school environment. Families should know their kids will be given every chance to succeed.
This fall, I’ll host a Pontiac Education Stability Roundtable with educators, parents, and community leaders to strengthen transfer protections, improve communication between districts, and ensure no student falls through the cracks. Our children’s futures are too important to leave to chance.

Last week, our community suffered another heartbreaking loss when Thomas Cummings was killed in a hit-and-run on Baldwin Avenue. My heart is with his family, friends, and everyone feeling the weight of this tragedy.
This is the second fatal crash on Baldwin in just a month. Pontiac deserves streets that are safe for everyone. I’m thankful for the new three-way stop and crosswalks recently added, but we must do more to make our streets safe for everyone. Thank you to our first responders for their swift action, and I urge anyone with information to please come forward.
I remain committed to working for safer roads and stronger protections so no family has to endure this pain again.

Nothing breaks my heart more than seeing veterans—those who served our country with courage—standing on street corners, asking for food. These are the soldiers who fought to protect our freedoms, and they deserve our deepest respect and support.
Now, with cuts to SNAP benefits coming out of Washington, more than 40,000 veterans in Michigan could lose access to the basic food assistance they rely on. I'm worried that even more of our heroes will be forced to turn to the streets, simply to survive.
This is unacceptable. Our veterans deserve better—much better—than this.

On the first day of the Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) Conference, I participated in detailed discussions about how federal budget decisions, particularly those in H.R.1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” may impact essential health care services across our state and in House District 53.
One key topic was the Title X program, which supports voluntary family planning and preventive health services such as wellness exams, cancer screenings, STI testing, and contraceptive counseling. Title X is funded through annual appropriations, and if it is not included in the final budget, that funding does not carry forward. This would affect clinics that serve many families in Pontiac, Waterford, and Auburn Hills.
We also reviewed the role of the Insurance Provider Assessment (IPA), which helps Michigan draw down federal Medicaid funds to support health care for children, seniors, and working families. If federal Medicaid funding structures change, it could impact how this assessment is used, and how those funds support local health care access.
These are complex issues that deserve careful attention. My goal is to ensure our community understands how federal and state-level decisions intersect, especially when it comes to preserving access to preventive and primary care.
As your state representative, I remain focused on solutions. I will continue working with community leaders and policymakers to protect the health and well-being of everyone in House District 53.
