Today, I joined my Democratic colleagues for a press conference to discuss the state budget and underscore the urgency of meeting the deadline of July 1st. My Democratic colleagues and I stand ready to negotiate a balanced budget. Unfortunately, it’s my colleagues across the aisle who are manufacturing uncertainty about our ability to pass the budget on time.

When we fail to deliver a budget on time, school boards are forced to make decisions without the information they need, leaving parents in the dark about the programs available to their children. Ultimately, it’s our kids who pay the price for this uncertainty.

We need to stop treating our kids like political footballs and instead focus on providing the resources they need for safe, reliable, and effective learning opportunities.

Last week, I had the honor of joining the Governor to sign four of my bills into law:

HB 5434 – Designates part of M-11 as the Korean War Veterans Memorial Drive
HB 5649 – Requires public high schools to offer a computer science course
HB 5522 – Adds MiLEAP leadership to the Midwestern Higher Education Compact
HB 5523 – Strengthens community action efforts supporting low-income Michiganders

I’m especially grateful to have shared this moment with Gustavo Perez, Kent County Community Action Director, Larry Wyn, Computer Science Program Manager at GVSU, and Brian McGrain, Michigan Community Action Executive Director; whose work these bills help uplift.
